Free Heart Camp at Rajbiraj, Saptari
The purpose of JMT’s outreach programs are to take cardiac care closer to the doorsteps of people who are unable to avail these services due to financial, health and travel constraints. Hence, in order to make cardiac care accessible to the unprivileged areas, Jayanti Memorial Trust planned to conduct a free heart camp at Rajbiraj, Saptari.
Rajbiraj is a mid-sized municipality located in the south-eastern part of Madhesh Province of Nepal. Rajbiraj is the district headquarters of Saptari and is the eighth largest city in the province. The city area is spread over 55.64 km2 (21.48 sq mi) and comprises 16 wards. Even though Rajbiraj is well connected to other Nepalese cities by National Highway and Sub Highway, most of health care facilities in the city is often unequally distributed, with healthcare resources centralized around the city’s major urban centers. Hence, to bridge a gap between unequal distribution of healthcare facilities, Jayanti Memorial Trust with the support from Edward Life Sciences Foundation, University of Washington conducted a 4 days free cardiac camp at Rajbiraj, Saptari from Kartik 29th October to 1st November 2023. The team of JMT and MCVTC travelled with the necessary portable screening machine and required medicines with an aim to identify probable cardiac cases and to monitor the participants with history of cardiac cases.
In coordination with our technical team Manmohan Cardiothoracic Vascular and Transplant Center (MCVTC), Nepal Youth Foundation (NYF) and Gajendra Narayan Singh Hospital, Rajbiraj,
Rajbiraj Municipality, we were able to screen 1250 patients from different wards of Rajbiraj. Along with 16 wards of Rajbiraj, patients from 2 wards ie Tirhut and Kanchanpur were also screened.
